Lust – Part I

Good Day,

As the Lord spoke to me about Lust, I realized it wouldn’t be in one devotion. Hence, this three part devotion will be separated in this order:

  • Joseph’s Seducer
  • Tamar’s Rape
  • Similarities, Differences, and the Effects

I pray that the Lord will bless you as you read His Word.

1 John 2:16 (KJV)
For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

When we read the story of Potiphar’s wife in Genesis 39, we see how she, day after day, seduced Joseph and made his job difficult in Potiphar’s house. When we do more research on Potiphar’s wife, we find out how she longed to be with Joseph. She thought about him all the time, threatened him if he wouldn’t lay with her. But he set his eyes on his true God and knew that if she tried punishing him that the Lord would get him through this. If we remember, Joseph had already been through a lot in his short life and knew the power of the Lord and the understanding of keeping steadfast on what he believed.

When she knew she couldn’t shake his faith, she went into a depression. She lost weight because she couldn’t eat, and was in a “love sick” state. This woman had everything she ever needed and wanted. But she turned her eyes to something she couldn’t have. She had much power in the home but no power over Joseph.

Are we satisfied with where we’re at in life or de we lust for someone or something else? The grass always looks greener in the other backyard. But we know that whoever’s backyard we go into, there’s a share of hidden issues to deal with. Of course, it’s not seen until you allow yourself to venture over and “experience” what’s there.

Even her friends saw the beauty of Joseph and were cheering her on to try various things to entice him to lay with her. When we’re going through tough times in life, it’s so important that our confidants in life are not those that will agree on everything we do, but are those who will challenge, disagree, and make you think about the outcome of your actions. Be careful of those that will go as far as to assist you in orchestrating potential harmful decisions.

Proverbs 27:9 (AMP)
Oil and perfume rejoice the heart; so does the sweetness of a friend’s counsel that comes from the heart.

Was Potiphar’s wife lustful for this young man to lie with her or was it lust for power? Some of us strive for power of position, status, and to be in important visible titles. But the Lord wants us to reach out not for worldly things but for the lowly, needy, and powerless’ of the world.

Deuteronomy 15:11 (AMP)
For the poor shall never cease out of the land: therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt open thine hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor, and to thy needy, in thy land.
